Britain's Parking Fines on Google Earth

We've been messing around with Google Earth, trying to make our latest scoop about parking tickets look a bit more visually exciting.

Local authorities are raising huge sums of money from parking fines - some have generated more than £1m of fines from a single street. Extraordinary. Outrageous. But not much to look at.

Google Earth is a great way to make this kind of geographical info more attractive to surf through. It's already used quite a lot on telly - a quick swoop above Iraq on Google Earth is much cheaper than hiring a helicopter and heading out to the Middle East.

But it's also an easy way to make an interactive map. We produce a little file with all the co-ordinates in it, and anyone with Google Earth an upload it.

So we've produced a Google Earth 'layer' with all the parking ticket hotspot on it, shown as little red cars. Have a look here to download the instructions on how to do view it.

Is Alan Johnson running for leader?

Is Alan Johnson running for leader of the Labour Party? Well someone clearly thinks so - they've registered johnson4leader.co.uk and a number of other domain names.

As our regular blog expert Iain Dale explains, it's a classic internet story, where schemeing politicos have been caught by sleuthing geeks, who understand the tech much better than they do.

The best detail of the story is that the owner of the domains tried to cover his or her tracks by setting up the websites to forward all visits to the homepage of Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota.

'Oh fine,' you're invited to think - 'It's an American site. Nothing to do with us.' But why would a US senator register a UK internet address? As soon as someone raises this question on a blog, the site mysteriously stops pointing to Tim Johnson's blog.

Busted! But who exactly has been busted? The domain name is registered is in the name of a David Taylor. But who exactly is he? And is he linked with Alan Johnson?

Chatting to the world's most popular blogger

Blogging has taken off in China in a big way. Even China's police service has a blog and it attracted over a million hits when it launched a photo section introducing the force's hottest police-women.

Partly due to a clever move by one of China's web portals sina.com, blogging has become a daily habit for many of China's rich and famous. Sina offered a blog home to around 100 Chinese celebrities; creating an enormous boost to its own traffic.  Now property tycoon Pan Shiyi has one. Hong Huang publisher of Time Out Beijing has one. Even writer Peter Mayle has a Chinese blog on Sina.

Last week Technorati revealed that for the first time it is a Chinese blog which has the most hits of all the blogs in the world.  The world's top blog belongs to Xu Jinglei an actress and filmmaker from Beijing.  She is on 10 million and rising.

While big hit blogs from around the world have focused on subjects like music, science, technology, Xu's is a little different.  She admits that her writing is totally 'za', meaning she writes on a vast range of things.  Her blog is written in a very personal way.  She writes about the little things in life, from her musings on karaoke nights out, to visits home to her grandmother, and letting off steam after frustrating days at work. Her entries move between the frivolous and the philosophical.  Her writing style is simple yet rhythmic and comfortable to read.

The cosmonaut's crusade for free computers

What would you do if you'd made £400m in the last tech boom? Relax and take it easy?

Well, for Mark Shuttleworth, the choice was easy, writes Ben King. After a quick trip to space as an amateur cosmonaut, he went back into computing.

But his choice of projects has been a fascinating one. He launched his own desktop operating system. So instead of a Windows computer or a Mac, you can run your machine on Ubuntu.

Even with those deep pockets, taking on tech industry titans like Microsoft and Apple will be tough.  But Shuttleworth is giving his product away for free.

Ubuntu will still do all the basic things you'd want a computer to do, like email, web surfing, music or document writing.

Did the Queen of Routine throw her toys out of her pram?

For some this is the tale of how the author of a best-selling parental guide cried like a baby.

For others including the woman in question - Gina Ford, left, author of 'The Contented Little Baby Book' - it's a question of protecting a reputation from incessant attack.

Attacks from users of a website called Mumsnet included the one about how Ms Ford 'straps babies to rockets and fires them into south Lebanon'.

And for the rest of us in the multimedia publishing business it raises questions about how we deal with user comments or, in the present argot, user generated content.

Here at More4 News and Channel 4 News we have a fairly pragmatic approach to potentially defamatory and abusive posts to our Forums. We allow every post to go up immediately but have a commitment to remove anything that may be libellous, defamatory or just plain abusive within 24 hours. In the business it's called post-moderation.

The upside is that approval doesn't slow down genuine debate. The downside is that unpleasant remarks might float around in cyberspace for a while.

Meanwhile, on the More4 News blog we have been - up to now - a little more conservative, choosing to pre-moderate all comments that come in. (On the other hand, we don't ask you to register before commenting).

It's a policy that's always up for review but in the light of the Mumsnet saga perhaps we'll stick to the cautious approach for a little while longer. Cowards, us?

Does this look like a Million Dollar Body?

A student from Stockholm has come up with the idea of giving companies the opportunity to tattoo his body - for commercial purposes.

It's a rip off of the successful Million Dollar homepage - which featured the same idea with pixels.

The Million Dollar homepage sold pixels for $1 each. Philip Airosa, the 21 year-old Swede behind Million Dollar Body, is charging $1,000 per square centimeter.

Airosa's business partner told Channel 4 Radio's Morning Report: "We are one hour from our first tattoo".

The Digital Long Tail

A new phrase has really caught the imagination here at ITN.  "The Long Tail".   So much so that our editor, Will Thorne, even has a copy a book bearing its name on his desk (notices Iain Overton). 

Of course, The Long Tail, might be yet another buzz word that catches the zeitgeist, then quickly gets lost in the ever-changing world of the media, but its principles are defining and will be felt long after the phrase is forgotten.

"The Long Tail" was first coined by the American writer Chris Anderson. Beginning in a series of speeches in early 2004 and culminating with the publication of a Wired Magazine article later that year, Chris described the effects of the long tail on current and future business models. 

The basic principle of the Long Tail is that products that are in low demand or have a low sales volume can, if managed correctly, collectively make up a market share that rivals or exceeds the relatively few current bestsellers and blockbusters. That is, if the store or distribution channel is large enough.

Iain Dale: Speed-humps and back-stabbing

Iain Dale files another report from the political blogosphere this week for Channel4 Radio's Morning Report.

This episode reveals some surprising stories - the Tory behemoth whose lasting legacy was the introduction of the speed hump.

Also, how David Miliband found himself on the front page of the Sunday Times, courtesy of a tip-off from Downing Street. But which address? Number 10 or Number 11? Well, Guido Fawkes happened to overhear.

He also mentions Ellee Seymour, and his blog of the week is Stephen Pollard, for his caustic analysis. One of the few mainstream media commentators who understands what blogging is all about.
